Witnesses told police that a large caused the 16-foot boat to capsize, throwing its four occupants overboard.

A Good Samaritan was able to rescue two people – a 19-year-old and a 17-year-old – who stayed with the boat, a VMPD spokesperson said. They were later taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and remain in a stable condition.

A Coast Guard unit found the body of a third person, 18-year-old Cory Alles of Bentonville, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

A 17-year-old male is still missing, with marine police continuing their search for him on Sunday.

Water temperatures in Chincoteague Bay are currently around 43 degrees.

The US Coast Guard, Virginia Marine Police, Virginia State Police, Maryland State Police, and the Chincoteague Police Department are all currently investigating the incident.

“The Virginia Marine Police and the Virginia Marine Resources Commission offers its deepest condolences to the families during this time,” officials said in a statement, according to The Virginian-Pilot.
