GIOVANNI VAN BRONCKHORST looks set to replace Steven Gerrard as Rangers manager – and is the 1/9 favourite with bookmakers Betfair.

The Dutchman, who played at Ibrox between 1998 and 2001, held talks with the club over the weekend.

And reports suggest he could be confirmed as the club’s new boss in the coming days.

Van Bronckhorst, 46, won the title in Holland as Feyenoord boss but left his most recent job in China earlier this year due to the travel restrictions around coronavirus.

Rangers have been looking for a new boss since Gerrard took over at Aston Villa last week.

Gerrard led Rangers to their 55th title last season, breaking Celtic’s dominance and stopping their pursuit of 10 in a row.

Gerrard’s former England team-mate Frank Lampard is second favourite for the Ibrox hot seat but is now out to 13/2 with Van Bronckhorst heavily favoured for the role.

Derek McInnes, another former Rangers player, is third at 10/1 ahead of John Terry at 20/1.

An interesting development in the market overnight has seen Ronald Koeman, former Barcelona and Everton boss, cut to 20/1 from 33s.

Rangers next manager odds:

  • Giovanni van Bronckhorst 1/9
  • Frank Lampard 13/2
  • Derek McInnes 10/1
  • Kjetil Knutsen 17/1
  • John Terry 20/1
  • Ronald Koeman 20/1
  • Michael O’Neil 33/1
  • Gennaro Gatusso 33/1

Rangers sit four points clear of Celtic after 13 games and play Hibs in the Premier Sport Cup semi-final this weekend.

They also have a fight on their hands to get into the knockout stages of the Europa League with two games left.

And while Van Bronckhorst looks like the man for the job, Rangers legend Ally McCoist fancies Lampard for it, believing he’d be keen to outdo Gerrard if given the chance.

“I need to tell you right now, that’s one of the reasons I quite like it,” he said on talkSPORT.

“Frank will not want Steven to have done a better job than him. So, straight away, I quite enjoy the competition with Frank coming in.

He added: “It’s a great job. You’re sitting top of the league, you’re in the semi-final of the cup coming up at the weekend.

“And, if you win your next home game in Europe, you’re just about going to get second place in that group.

“To continue that is a little bit of a gamble but, at the same time, what an attractive job.”
