The miniseries follows the story of a family-run sports company manager called Sam who becomes caught up in the brutal death of someone at her office.

The thriller, based in the north of England, also features Chewing Gum’s Susan Wokoma and Orphan Black’s Alison Steadman who try to unravel the mystery behind the death.

While some viewers had “high hopes” for the new show, others were left “disappointed” by the conclusion of the show and its “terrible” storyline.

Alongside an emoji of a confused face, one person fumed: “Never seen such rubbish. Five minutes in and I thought it would be a s*** show.”

Echoing their comments, someone else said: “I enjoyed Rules of the Game, but the ending was very ‘meh’ and let it down.”

While a third added: “Just finished watching Rules of the Game and it’s the worst television show that I have ever had to endure. A complete waste of time.”

The series revolves around sexual politics in the workplace, inspired by the Harvey Weinstein scandal and #MeToo movement.

Each episode explores the lack of conversation around sexual misconduct in the workplace.

Anyone affected by the issues raised in Rules of the Game can get help and support through the BBC Action Line.

Rules of the Game and its four episodes are available to watch on the BBC iPlayer.
